Russian River Brewing Company. Santa Rosa, California.
This is our version of the 14 oz hop bomb brewed by the fine folks of the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California. This beer has been ranked number 1 in the annual readers' poll in Zymurgy Magazine six years in a row.
Makes 5 US gallons
Brewing as I type
Lots of Columbus hops, I’ve brewed this recipe through a different proprietor and so this will be interesting in comparison.

I brewed the extract version and after 2 weeks in the bottle it tastes excellent. It tastes very similar to the real deal and in my opinion has an even nicer aroma. If you are like me and don't have access to Pliny the Elder I'd highly recommend picking up this kit.

Brewed the AG version. After 2.5 weeks bottle conditioning, it is well carbinated and very aromatic. I could smell and taste orange and grapefruit in the easy to drink brew. Kept its head all the way through. Can't wait to see how this will taste after the full 6 weeks recommended conditioning, if it lasts that long.

I brewed the extract version. I kegged it on Friday night. We had friends over on Sunday and everyone loved it. It isnt fully carbonated yet, but i was letting people have small tastes. I can't wait for it to be fully carbed and ready to go. The extract kit is amazingly close to the real deal. Highly recommend this beer!!

Brewed as a mini-mash. Primary 9 days and 41 days in secondary with the dry hopping. After 4 weeks in the bottle, this beer is really coming into its own. Great nose and a big but mellow hoppy flavor. Definitely a keeper. I'll rebrew this again and again.

I brewed and bottled this about 3 months ago for a friend's birthday. It is the best beer I have ever brewed. Perfect head, great aroma, amazing flavor. My share of the batch is about gone so I purchased another kit to keg! Can't wait! If you enjoy a hoppy but not over powering beer this is for you!

finished my last 16 oz bottle yesterday. Still "fresh" and full of flavor. Good head retention until the end. Will brew again, if I get the chance. Most AHS recipes are good enough to brew again, but there is only so much I can do. Cheers.

I just tapped your Pliny the Elder clone this weekend and it is delicious! It's surprisingly smooth for 368 theoretical IBUs and the punch-you-in-your-face hop flavor and aroma are awesome. Based on the ~8% ABV I thought it might take a while to get through this keg, but after enjoying 4 or 5 pints with my brother-in-law this weekend I think it'll go much quicker than I originally expected!

I recently brewed this beer using the partial mash kit and it smelled fantastic from the beginning. Occasional tastings here and there were so flavorful. Do your self a HUGE favor and buy about a dozen of the small muslin bags to make hop balls. At 13 oz of hops for the boil, you will have a heck of a time trying to filter them all out and still have useable amounts of wort plus 3 to 4 oz of dry hops in the secondary translates to about FOUR INCHES of hops floating on top and about 10 days of waiting for this to clarify only to wind up with a good amount of hop sludge while bottling. All that aside, this is one of the better beers I have had!

I first brewed this recipe in 2010 and it was a winner (see comments under Michael S.). I recently repurchased the kit and all seemed to go very well. Although a very good IPA in its own right, the end product was not as I'd hoped or remembered, and certainly NOT Pliny-like. I dug through my old notes and found the original recipe from AHB. Wow! Lots of changes have been made. I'll be sure to brew to the OLD recipe next time.

Brewed up the All Grain version of this kit and I just sampled the bottle at 2 weeks after bottling and it's coming along quite nicely! The hop aroma is outstanding. I mixed all the dry hops together and divided them up in three equal parts and added one portion per week and bottled one week after the 3rd dry hop addition. I recommend purchasing a 5 gal paint strainer bag from one of the big box stores or a very large grain bag for your hop additions. Attach it to your boil kettle with some binder clips and toss your hops in that vs tossing in multiple small hop bags. I also recommend using a strainer between the bottling bucket/keg and the secondary when siphoning. This definitely hits the spot when you're in an IPA mood.

Did the extract version Opened the first bottle after a week (even though recipe says six weeks) and got a citrusy piney whiff of a famous vermont IPA. I messed up my water volume and measurement and added 1/2 lb DME to hit 1.071 and ended up overshooting and hitting 1.080. Fermented out with a 2 step 2 L starter of WLP001 down to 1.015. After 3 weeks in the bottle it's shaping up to be one of the best beers I have brewed yet.

For this, this wasn't a spot on Pliny clone. It was however, an awesome IPA. This was a beer I shared with my beer snob friends to show how good homebrew can be. Will definitely brew again.

I bought the Pliny the Elder kit when AHS had a 2 for 1 sale. The beer came out great. Hoppy and smooth. Delicious. I have never been able to get a hold of the original Pliny the Elder, so I am not sure how it compares to it, but I am very happy with this beer. It did get much better after waiting the 6 weeks.

2 weeks fermenting at about 67 and one week dry hop, kegged and one week later kaaaaa......powww... It is a hop bomb for sure. It is a double IPA for sure. Very smooth like an ipa should be and very dank and piney and citrusy. I've had Pliny 2x and it was remarkable. I'm not sure this is exactly like it, but of all of the beers that I've purchased or brewed, this beer reminds me the most of sweet sweet pliny. Now on to brew it again and I am also going to try the Heady Topper recipe. Nice Job AHS.

This was both my first "real" homebrew and my first from AHS. Great beer! So excited I get to have Pliny again (and again) even here in Texas. Kudos to AHS for their directions that came with it as well - even a noob like me couldn't screw it up!

Brewed a 5 gallon all grain kit with no deviations from the recipe and I would have to say that it is one of the best beers I have brewed this year. I would recommend letting it condition in the bottle for at least a month as the more this conditions, the better it is. It had a very pronounced bitterness after opening the first bottle at 3 weeks, but over time it has mellowed and deepened in flavor and mouthfeel. Even though it is expensive I'd say give it a try as there is a reason for all of the hype...all of the 14 plus ounces of hops really add up to one incredible hop bomb of a beer!

This is a great beer. I've had the real thing and this is dead on. I brewed all grain and pitched a single vial of WLP001. I skipped the secondary and went from primary to keg in about two weeks. This was my first attempt to keg and I force carbed it and drank it in three days. It needs clearing up a little, but the taste was great from the first glass. Fireworks at the Hollywood Bowl was great with a growler of my very own Pliney!

brewed this last January, bottled and ready to drink by May 2010. Could not save this stuff as it has been the best IPA I have brewed to date and I have done over 15 different IPAs (and some of those several times over). This is great stuff to me and my brew partner. It is a little too pricey but still a keeper that ALL IPA lovers must try before wasting $ on piss-ant watered down, no hopped, mislabeled IPAs.

I'm a huge fan of anything Russian River brews, and I made it out to the brewery last fall. Pliny the Elder is probably my favorite beer of all time. I brewed the extract version of this kit - didn't change a thing or add any ingredients. Sat in primary for 2 weeks, then secondary for about 2 weeks, then kegged it. A few days later it was ready to go. I was able to find the REAL Pliny the Elder on tap at a bar, so I was able to compare it to the original pretty accurately, and it's very close. The flavors and aroma were spot on. The only difference that I could tell right away was that my kit version came out very cloudy - didn't clear up at all. It really is an incredible kit and makes an incredible hop bomb brew. I had a major problem kegging this beer due to the fact that the kit had so many hops in it. My corney keg fittings kept getting clogged. Make sure you strain your wort, or use hop bags with this kit...hopefully you won't have the trouble that I did, but it was worth every drop. The ABV was spot-on at about 7.5%. I will definitely brew this again and again. Once you drink a pint of this beer you will be ruined. No other double IPA comes close.

I brewed this per request to be served at a wedding reception. I brewed the AG version. I have never seen so many hops in my life. It turned out amazingly smooth for the amount of hops that were used. It was a hit at the wedding reception (keg floated). Expensive recipe, but I may just do it again in the future since it turned out so great and was so well received.

Q:
How close to the original is this recipe?
Asked by:
Mark
- 12/13/2018
A:
This is our take on the recipe, so while we do try to get as a close to the original production as possible, would be our interpretation of the recipe and may have subtle differences from the bottles batch sold in stores
