dont order!!!!!!!! not even close to mac and jacks. just got done with bottle conditioning and cracked my first one and wow. as clear as a light lager with very very hoppy and fruity notes. id drink a bud light before brewing this again sad sad austin shame on you for saying mac and jack clone Hi Jeromy, I'm sorry the recipe didn't meet your expectations. I've reviewed the recipe and it is nearly identical to Mac & Jack's African amber as published by BYO, who gets these recipes from the breweries. The main difference between our version and the BYO/Brewery version is that we use bittering hop units called HBU instead of the centennial bittering hop listed in the BYO/Brewery version. In the BYO recipe it calls for 9.3 HBU's (aka AAU - Alpha Acid Units which is the same thing) of bittering, our recipes has 9 HBU's, a negligible difference. Beyond that we use a briess extract instead of a muntons extract and we include the actual malts instead of dme because the briess extract will give you the sugars you need and the malts will give you a better flavor and color. Below are two links, one is to the Mack & Jack's Amber Clone recipe from BYO and the other is a link to HBU's. We want you to be happy with your brew, so a member of our customer service team has reached out to see if there is anything we can do or go over in the process that might have affected this recipe (steep time & temp, age time, etc). http://austinhomebrew.com/assets/images/africanamberbyo.png https://www.austinhomebrew.com/Home-Bittering-Units_b_14.html

I need to preface my comments by letting you know that, living in the Seattle area, I am able to make a direct comparison to the real Mac and Jack's. The AHB version is a nice amber ale, but not true to the actual Mac and Jack's. Color and mouthfeel are right on. The AHB version is noticeably more citrus. I also felt that the base malts were a bit lacking as compared to the original. I believe that the real thing uses Maris Otter malts, lending a richer flavor. I really believe that this could hit the mark with some minor changes.

Will be my third time making this (first time all-grain) and it gets better and better each time. Living in Seattle, we get our fair share of the real mac and jacks and this is pretty close. The wife loves this beer better than the real thing and now that she has had my homebrew version she has no problem with the mess I make after brewing :)
