This stout (like all stouts) only got better and better over time. I started going though it as soon as it was carbonated. Has a nice wonderful malty chocolate stout taste and nice head retention. 10 days primary 10 days secondary and 10 days was carbonated in bottle. Around 70 degrees Fahrenheit was the fermenting temperature. This was the second batch of beer that I had ever brewed. Did the mini mash method. I have one 24 oz and one 12 oz bottle sitting and waiting for a rainy day. I will try the all grain method next time I make this and perhaps add some maltodextrin for a better foamy head. Winter will be on us soon enough.

This is the best kit I've ever purchased from AHS. I'm already a big fan of oatmeal beers and this is as good or better than anything you can get in a bar or at a store.

Solid beer, everyone enjoyed it. It is not the type of beer that you tell your buddy... you have to try this, and wait for their reaction after they take a few sips. It's the beer you just drink because it's good while you talk about other things....

Great beer. Needs plenty of time to age. I left it in primary for nearly 4 weeks before racking and bottling. Carbed up nicely within 2 weeks, but had a very thin mouthfeel- almost watery. However, another month of conditioning helped that tremendously. Decided to leave it alone for 2 more months to see what happened. Great results! The flavors have come together and the mouthfeel is superb. One note of advice- if you want the beer carbed appropriately for the style, you might consider cutting back the bottling sugar.

I love this stout! Each time I make it, everyone raves. My brother who loves Guinness with a passion actually told me it was a better beer! Also, it tastes just as good as some of the more expensive and complicated recipes out there. If you love stouts and want something that is ready to brew, go with this one.

I just kegged this one today and had to take a sample. This one was fermented for a few months and it was worth the wait. It will sit for another month in the keg before I really get into it but the taste and head are on spot.

This is awesome! Just tried one that I bottled 3 weeks ago. If it gets any better with age I won't be able to take it. Great head retention and aroma. I brewed this for the Fall/Winter Season doubt it will last that long. Thanks again AHS.

Another great brew from AHS! I brewed the extract kit. Primary a week and secondary for another. In the secondary I added just over 1 oz of light oak chips. Primed with 1.5 Dark DME and bottled. Tasted after the first week, it had a generous flavor of whiskey, decent head. Waited about a month after, and that flavor mellowed out. I have had many compliments on this one! Most from experienced well-rounded craft drinkers. I will definitely be ordering this one again! Cheers!

My favorite homebrew to date! I brew mini-mash and this was the 2nd recipe I tried. It is very smooth, not bitter at all, definite roasted/coffee/chocolate tones...Love it! I made this late last summer/early fall. We are making it again this weekend.

I've been brewing a few years now, and this is the only stout I've tried. I really enjoyed it and keep this "on the rotation". One small change I made was I added a tablespoon of unsweet coco powder. that seems to add a nice, non-hoppy bitter taste which goes well with the smoothness of the oatmeal. I think I'm going to continue to add 1 tbl - 1.5 tbl to this recipe... but I really prefer my beer bitter.

Brewed the extract version. I was a little worried about extract twang from Dark LME and a lack of oatmeal flavor since I was not mashing. I used White Labs British Ale WLP005 and followed the recipe exactly and it turned out great! 14 days in primary, no secondary fermentation. Bottled with 4 oz. corn sugar. Tasted at 1 week and it was partially carbonated but still green and a bit yeasty. At two weeks it has a nice persistent head and the flavor is great. Likely it will be even better next week. I will probably do the partial mash for the next batch, to have a bit more oatmeal flavor and mouthfeel, but I am VERY happy with this recipe and it will be a standard.

Really great recipe. I added wildflower honey and cinnamon during the one hour boil. Sat in primary for 10 days then xfrd to secondary and let it bulk condition for 4wks. I bottled it and let it condition in the bottle for 3wks. Good carbonation and a nice dark foamy head with great retention. Well balanced with a smooth malty aftertaste. With the amount of honey that I added it turned out to be ~9.2% ABV. Nice and stout just like I like 'em! Definitely will do well with even more time on the shelf. I'll be making this one again next winter.

As many have noted, the longer you wait, the better it gets. It's about 5 months since I brewed the beer (mini mash)...it tastes excellent. Great head retention. It has a sturdy stout flavor and the oatmeal gives the nice mouthfeel and silkiness. Earlier on, the beer was good but a bit sharper than I prefer...I tend towards the malty side of the spectrum. Now, after 5 months, I'd characterize it as "assertive with curves." A delicious balance.

At a week after bottling I was a bit unimpressed by this stout. Happily I just shelved it and didn't pick it back up for about another month. By then it was excellent and only got better the longer it rested. At about 2 1/2 to 3 months after bottling it was superb! I highly recommend that you brew this one around September or October so that it is ready by winter.

Outstanding beer, very accurate for the style too! I made this one on Christmas day and it turned out to be a whopping good beer. I used the alcohol boost and it put this thing up to nearly 9%!!!! Needless to say, I dont think you really need the booster... I didnt find a single person who didnt love this one, it disappeared so quickly that I had none left over to cellar! I'll be putting this one in my regular winter rotation.

You have to let this one age a good 4-5 weeks or longer if you can, it makes a world of difference. I tried one bottle at 3 weeks and thought I had done something wrong, and 5 weeks it was superb! I will buy this kit again, probably a double batch even.
