Lots and lots of hops are balanced with a rich malty flavor. Its high gravity make this beer a sit down sipper.

Wasn't bad, but nothing ground breaking
I purchased this because of the excellent marketing for this beer. It's claim stated that this kit would not last, so I assumed that this was the be-all, end-all of DIPA. This was my first Austin kit, and I was very impressed with what you get in the kit. They are even cool enough to include some yeast nutrient and whirlfloc (you pay for it though). I already had these ingredients on hand, so including it was a bit unnecessary and I wish there was an option to exclude it if you already have it. I brewed according to the directions and got fermentation within 6 hours of pitching due to my yeast starter. I used a 6 gallon carboy with a blow off tube and had absolutely no problem with fermentation. The beer is pretty good. It has a very fruity/tropical nose and drinks very sweet and fruity with an alcohol sting. The hop flavor was a little weak and succumbed to the maltiness, but that's understandable when using magnum, which have a lower AA than typical bittering hops. This was the first time using corn sugar as a body/alcohol booster (came with the kit) and I feel that that contributed to a "fake" element to the beer. Needless to say, I like the beer, but it is not something I'd say was outstanding and crave it and I probably wouldn't order it again. For the price, I don't think it was worth it. Here is a few beers that I enjoy, if you like these beers, you might feel the same way as I do: Heady Topper, Swish, Res and Hi-Res, Space Cake, Hop Juice, Ruination

This beer was one of my first to keg. WOW! This beer was my best yet. It has converted some of my friends to start homebrewing. I used the alcohol boost with it and it was a real butt kicker! GREAT DIPA -coachG

I also had some explosive fermentation with this brew. I strongly recommend that you setup up a blow off as soon as you put this in primary. Mine has only been in bottles 2.5 weeks and it is an absolutely glorious IPA. I'm a hophead so this is one of my favorites. If you can't handle heavy IBU brews along with heavy hop aroma then this isn't the recipe for you. I think I'll order it again right now :)

Liquid heaven best describes this beer. After nine days, I sampled this between the transfer from primary to secondary and was amazed. The aroma was incredible. After five more days, the taste from secondary to keg was even better. Now the hop presence was very pronounced and smooth. Now fully force-carbonated/conditioned for 10-days, this brew is my stand alone favorite. Although I know it will only get better with age, my liver cannot wait and this needs to be enjoyed ASAP! I highly recommend this beer

Wow! I advise against making a starter for this one! Blew off and broke my airlock, then proceeded to blow the top off the 6.5 gallon plastic primary fermenter. So I hooked up a blow off tube. SAME THING! May have open fermented for a while, but with the amount of CO2 coming off it, I don't think the ambient air had a chance of getting near the green beer! Once that settled down, turned out great. I have named it EF'D IPA. That's Explosive Fermentation Double India Pale Ale! Will bw doing again.

I bought this after having tried a Double IPA at a brewpub. This kit came out almost exacltly like what I had at the brewpub. The primary difference is that my brew is almost flat. It did not bottle carbonate well. But it is still very good. Color and thickness are almost like apple cider. Thick, great hop taste, slight bitterness, and plenty of sweet maltiness. Pretty extreme for most beer drinkers. I Love it.

I brewed the mini-mash last night and it made the entire house smell like hops, very good smell if I don't say myself. Followed the recipe other than adding the adding 1% ABV boost and ended up with an 1.1 original gravity; it will defiantly end up being a sipping beer. I also double pitched (Wyeast American) as recommended. Before I bought the kit I read the comments and seen how every suggesting to use a blow of hose. I thought the reason everyone had to use blow off hose was because they were using 6.5 gallon carboys. Thus I felt I didn't need to use mine because I am brewing in a 7.5 gallon glass carboy. Since I have got this carboy I have never had to use a blow off hose, that wasn't the case this time. When I got up this morning my airlock was foaming from the air vents. I should have listened everyone else comments and went with the blow off. I can't wait to taste this batch!!!

Outstanding IPA, but be warned a blow off tube is necessary... I also added the 1% ABV boost and ended up with an 11.5% ABV beer. Sipping beer indeed !!! I will be brewing this one again...

I tried the Bell's Hopslam and fell in love with DIPA. When I saw this beer I had to try it and man it turned out just as good if not better. I wanted even more hops than it called for so I added an oz of the cascade leaf hops as an additional dry hop. Also instead of cooking the hops into the wort I made a "hop tea" in a seperate stainless steel pot and stained them into the wort at the very end before I chilled to room temp. This is an excellent beer that I would highly recommend.

Brewed this one in the garage and the smell pulled neighbors out of their houses armed with pint glasses. Worth the price. I brewed this one back in December 07, bottled it, and it may very well be the best IPA I have brewed (huge Stone IPA fan).

Got the mini-mash kit with double pitched dry yeast. Violent first stage fermentation for the first 48 hours as stated by previous reviewers. Rig a blowoff tube and put the fermenter in a bathtub, you have been warned. Lots of hops, filtered out as much break as I could going into primary but still could not get a good hydro reading for all the floating debris. Turned out great, used finings in secondary, sat in secondary for 2.5 months before I got around to bottling and came out clearer than my previous recipes. Flavor very strong and not for the faint of heart. If you don't like IPAs keep moving. If you don't know if you like IPAs you will know after you taste this brew.

Ok... Cool brew. Turned out to be around 10% with gravity readings spot on at 2 weeks primary and 1 week secondary. I did a yeast starter with the single white labs liquid vial, and added the 1% boost. I recommend filtering and using good bags for the hops. Taste was kinda unbalanced and bitter at 2 weeks bottle conditioning, but week 3 has actually made a difference into being enjoyable. Appearance = Gold/dirty yellow/orange, not much head at all... some fizzy small lace. Smell = Musty citrus/apricot with some boosy alcohol present. Taste = Citrus/apricot/grapefruit/boosy-alcoholish, grassy bitter aftertaaste. Mouth-feel = Big aftertaste, medium/perfect carbonation, not too syrupy and not too thin. Overall = I gotta let this age a little more, but seems to be a very nice DIPA kit, not your normal West coast style... but Its HEAVY and has a good taste.

The Double IPA has taken a while to mature in the bottle (5 weeks to a drinkable state in my case) but it was worth the wait. The combination of maltiness plus the half pound of hops is unlike anything else that I have brewed. A slight taste of alcohol is detectable behind all that flavor. I'm going to have to warn people before they decide to open one of these! I think it might kill members of the BMC crowd. I brewed it as a mini mash with dry yeast, 3 weeks primary, 2 weeks in the bright tank (probably not necessary) and 5 weeks so far in the bottle. I think this is one that will age extremely well if I can keep it around.

I brewed the extract version in April 2010. Like most have pointed out, blow off tube is required. I went with the dry yeast and followed the directions to a T. You can easily see the final product is a high quality beer, perfect color and head. That being said, I need to warn people before they try it. The flavor and kick are very strong. Overall, it's pretty good but you can sometimes taste the alcohol even with the strong flavor.

Ordered the AG version of this double and I love it, even though I made a mistake. Spent 1 week in the primary and then moved to the secondary. After three weeks in the secondary, I got my priming sugar added into the bottling bucket and started transfering the beer. That is when I realized that I forgot to add the dry hops. So I added the dry hops and put it back into the carboy and it sat there for a while because I was building my kegerator and did not want to bottle. After 6 weeks in the carboy, I kegged it and gassed it. Very smooth double with a hint of citrus and perfect head. Will definitely be adding this to my rotation.
