not a hoppy IPA kit
A low budget IPA kit. I replaced all the hopps in the kit with my own choices. Cenntenial, cascade, and dry-hopped with Amarillo. I brewed the mini-mash with wyeast liquid yeast . Even with my hopps, still a mild IPA,not bad,not great.

Great beer! I dry-hopped with amarillo to give it a bit more citrus aroma, but the taste is great. All my IPA friends loved this beer (even my wife). I pitched 2 packets of dry yeast and hit the 1.010 FG exactly.

Brewed this about 6 weeks ago now. Left in primary for four. Dry hopped with 1 oz of Amarillo for a week. Has been in the bottle for a week. Set aside three bottles to taste for each week of conditioning. The first bottle obviously tells me it needs to grow up a little still, but you can tell this is going to be a really tasty beer!

Very good IPA. I brewed the all-grain version. I took some other's advice and dry hopped 1oz of amarillo. I Very good aroma, good tasting IPA. Sampled at various time after kegging. Highly recommend that you allow this beer to mature per instructions. Had a bite at first when young; however, it matured into a great tasting IPA. I will brew this one again.

This is a great recipe. I used the notty and let it ferment around 64 for about 2-3 weeks in primary. I took note of one of the post on here and dry hopped with amarillo for 7 days. This puppy turned out great. Not too heavy, it can be a little heady but thats most likely user error. After 3-4 weeks in the bottle this one is really coming into it's own. Will brew again for sure.

Fantastic beer! I modified the recipe slightly by first-wort hopping and then I dry-hopped with 1oz of Amarillo hops (not included in the kit). I think this is the best beer I've made to date. I will be making this again.

The best IPA I have ever had. I modified the recipe by first wort hopping and adding an extra ounce of Cascade (not included in the kit) for dry hopping, and it was simply divine, with a smooth bitterness and awesome Cascade flavor and aroma. Highly recommended!

An amazing IPA. This was my first all grain batch to brew and it turned out great. A well balanced IPA that I just can't get enough of. I dry hopped for 7 days with 1oz of cascade like advised in the other comments and it turned out great. Even my friends who aren't crazy about hoppy beer were raving about this one. The only problem that I have is that it was hard to stop drinking! Will definitely be brewing again soon.

Hands down the best I've brewed. This was my first all grain attempt and it got me hooked. I brewed this back in November and kegged it the second week of December...it was gone by Xmas. My efficiency was a little low, but it still produced a 6% beer. The color was a nice, dark red and one of the best aspects was the creamy, well-structured head. Although I used irish moss, the beer came out pretty hazy....maybe a result of too much stirring during the boil and then not enough time to settle. Regardless, this was a sweet, hoppy and full flavored ale. This is the first one I've brewed that I felt was on par with a commercial beer. That's of course due to the ingredients and not the brewer! The AG version is obviously very forgiving seeing as I knocked it out of the park the first time 'round.....a great one for beginners and experts alike.

Extract with alc boost. 7 in primary 20 in secondary kegged 6.2%. Without a doubt my best IPA to date. To me this is the little cousin of DFH 90 min. Well balanced beer that a word description does not do justice for. I dry hopped with 1 oz cascade but will be doing many more of this and experimenting with various dry hop additions. For price and results this is an excellent beer and I don't see it lasting much longer in the keg as 1-2 glasses a night turn easily into 3-4. A must try for IPA lovers and those on the fence.

This recipe has been one of the favorites of my friends. I made the mini mash version on 12/26/10 and added a 1% alcohol boost. It took a lot of work to keep this one aging in the keg and not in a mug. This one will be revisited and some hop experiments made.

One of my first home brews. Came out very well. Going to definitely do this one again. Next time I will try dry hopping to boost the hoppyness. Video of my AHS American IPA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB0aVZMmJys One addition I did make to this batch was adding about a pound of Corn sugar.

This was a first all-grain attempt for me, and it turned out great. Single infusion mash produced a slightly darker coloring than I would have expected (almost an amber). Your directions were easy to follow, and the kit was packaged well, so the hydrometer I ordered with the kit survived shipping. Great flavor! I agree with an earlier review that this might come across more like an APA, but whatever you want to call it, I'm making more.

So thrilled as to how this turned out. This was my first 5 gallon all grain recipe. I slightly undershot my OG dues to learning new equipment but it still produced a 5.8% masterpiece. This beer is not aggressively hopped. In my opinion its more of an American Pale Ale. In no way does that take from the quality of the final product. It's really well balanced with the perfect amount of bitterness. Titles aside, if you want to call this an APA, IPA, or just a Pale Ale.....Whatever you call it, IT'S GOOD!!!!

Best beer yet from AHS! I'm not a "hop-head" so a little leary of the IPA family. This kit is does not have that overwhelming hop content and was balanced well. Based on the above comments I tried the extract kit with alcohol boost and the taste was fantastic! You have to try it.

Batch maybe about #70. Mini mash - I have not always given AHS glowing remarks on a few of their recipes - in fact a few I just did not like at all. First let me say that this is a crowd pleaser even for (as some have mentioned) non-IPA people which makes perfect sense. I feel this is more like a stronger Amber or perhaps an American Brown. Here is why. For one thing AHS always over estimates the ABV. No way will this get to 6.6% unless you have 100% brewery efficiency and with an extract no way will that EVER happen 70% IF you are lucky. IPA? hmmmm 3 oz's of hops TO ME is not an American IPA - British IPA is closer with the Special B adding a lot of Carmel and darkness. AGAIN - very very good brew!! In fact it will be offered in a brewery as a guest tap so . . . . . . It'll turn out darker then an American and with only an estimated 35 IBUs it falls short. HOWEVER - the good news - it's a WONDERFUL beer. It's a quaffer and before you know it your glass is empty. The American Ale II should be brewed on the warmer side, closer to 70 for more hops, cooler for cleaner brew. The Special B is what makes this beer so tasty. Go for it if you want a beer that will please everybody but if you are looking for a hop bomb look elsewhere.

AHS does not provide the recipe prior to purchase, so I'll be careful not to expose the actual recipe, but there are some important things to note. The kit comes with only 3 ounces of hops - including 1 ounce for dry hopping. As far as I'm concerned, that's not enough to call a kit an IPA. I was concerned that there would not be enough hops, so I also ordered 2 ounces of nugget hops that I added at 30 mins and at flameout. The resulting brew is not bad, but I will not purchase this kit again because it is not what I consider an IPA.

I used the mini-mash kit. Used a yeast starter, fermentation started within hours and finished in under a week. I left it in the fermenter for three weeks to clear up (and because I got busy). Went straight from primary to bottles. Refrigerated a few after 3 weeks in bottles, and they tasted great! Even the wife likes them, after my last couple batches of beer have been sub-par. Some people commented this isn't hoppy enough for an IPA. I think it's plenty hoppy, and I'm glad I did not add more hops than what comes with the kit. It has good bitterness and hoppy aroma. This should satisfy most people's quench for something hoppy and easy to drink. I would only add more hops if you're a big hophead drinker.
